If you’ve made it this far, you already deserve a pat on the back, what with the courting period, and if you are preparing for that romantic proposal, your thoughts must turn to the engagement ring and it can be very daunting to choose the right engagement ring, so I though to share some of my thoughts on this dilemma, skipping my usual topics.  If we look at the eternal debate on whether or not your partner should have some input with engagement ring selection, a balance needs to be strucked. You do want her input regarding designs and preferences, and of course, you will need to find out her ring size, yet there should still be an element of surprise, and if she is not present when you actually buy the ring, you have enough of the surprise factor to stay close to tradition.

Single or Multi-Stones?

In all honesty, this question should be answered by your partner, as she is the one who will be wearing the ring for the rest of her life. While surprises are nice and can be romantic, the basic design of the ring should have her input, and if you are the observant type, take note of the jewellery she wears, and perhaps look for one of her close friends who can help you with information about your partner’s preferences. The chosen friend could always approach your girlfriend and pretend she is looking at engagement rings, and with some online browsing, your intended is bound to reveal her real likes and dislikes, and armed with this critical information, you can be confident in your choice of rings. There are some unique engagement rings in Toronto at Diamonds for Less, and whether she prefers a single diamond or a cluster, prices are affordable.

Base Metal Selection:

Gold is, of course, very popular, yet it is not durable, and perhaps platinum is the better choice, although it does lose a little of its lustre after a while, and white gold is more durable than yellow gold, and some couples prefer mixed base metals, which does add a certain uniqueness. Yellow gold will wear down over time and after 15-20 years, the ring might have to be re-shanked, which is perhaps the reason why many couples are choosing platinum as the base metal for their engagement rings. If you would like some background information on platinum, there is an overview of the metal’s amazing properties that you can refer to.

Practicality:

Your partner will not want to take the engagement ring off, and therefore, the design should be something simple, and with not too high a raise, as this will catch on clothing. The ring should be pulled through some sheer fabric, which will reveal if the ring is liable to get caught during the daily activities we all encounter. Bevelled edges are advised, as this facilitates durability, and try to avoid slim claws, as they are easily prize open.

Your ring selection is important, and with some clandestine help from her friends, you will hopefully choose the perfect engagement ring that will symbolise your eternal love. If you are not sure about designs, there are many images online, and it is only by browsing that you can safely say you have made an informed decision.
